Green Teams

Our December 3, 2007, meeting was a packed agenda with great ideas about the city's comprehensive plan, Cortez's recycling and Montezuma's landfill progress and plans for the future. Our thanks go out to Rebecca Whitehead, Wes Sprague and Deb Barton (truly the "Garbage Goddess" of four corners!)

Green teams officially formed and we missed having many of you there to particpate. Here's your chance to participate in 08! Jump on one of your passions below and attend their meetings. Questions? Contact the liason and join the team. Make your New Year's resolution now to get involved and get green.

Renewable Energy sign up campaign

Jodi Foran882-2401 jodi@foran.net

Susan Thomas739-3158susanethomas@earthlink.net

This team will encourage local use of renewable energy. For example, Montezuma County residents will be encouraged to buy Renewable Energy Credits from Empire Electric. These credits are inexpensive and will encourage power suppliers to provide more renewable energy.

The team has prepared a trifold brochure explaining Empire's 2008 Renewable Energy Credits program.

Several team members are very much interested in M-CAN influencing young people and have proposed interesting ideas for working with local schools.

Recycling

Susan Thomas739-3158susanethomas@earthlink.net

Julia Garratt

The Recycling team will encourage residents to participate in the already available types of recycling as well as working with the cities and county to provide further recycling methods (for instance, plastics).

An early activity of this team is a comprehensive survey of area recycling resources which will result in a published matrix of recyclable material and places to recycle those materials.

Education/Outreach

Chris Foran882-2401chris@foran.net

The Education/Outreach team will design informative programs for our public meetings as well as conducting other public education projects.

Note that the Renewable Energy team has an interest along these lines (school programs).

Community Food and Farms

Jimbo Buickerood565-7191 ext 3jimbobuickerood@frontier.net

Our five point initiative for Montezuma County at this time: 1) Farm/Ranch to School food program, 2) community gardens, 3)creating awareness of the availability and benefits of locally produced foods, 4) school programs including gardening and knowledge of local agriculture and 5) support for local farmers/ranchers to find markets close-to-home.

Our specific concentration this summer is the pursuit of grant monies to fund a Community Food and Farms Project Director position to lead the implementation of the program outlined above.  Community members interested in furthering local production, processing, storage and consumption of locally grown foods are welcome to join the CFF Green Team.

Our aim - Relocalize Agriculture!!

Carbon Footprint Reduction

Sue Whitehead882-2155simma.w@gmail.com

Carbon footprint reduction is the name of our game. Join this team to help with a campaign aimed at showing Montezuma County residents how they can personally reduce their carbon footprint and track their own progress toward a household 5000lb CO2 reduction goal.

This team is designing tools to be used by Carbon Footprint Reduction clubs that they intend to form from M-CAN and community members.
